Due to the extensive use and mining of asbestos in the past, Australia now has one of the highest incidences of mesothelioma in the world.

The state of New South Wales has the highest number of new mesothelioma cases each year. Government experts believe the incidence rate of mesothelioma in Australia will not peak until 2017, primarily due to the severe latency period associated with the disease. In most cases, symptoms take between 20 and 50 years to arise.
